Progress of Pharmacology, Potential Hepatotoxicity and Pharmacokinetics of Dioscin

Abstract

Abstract: Dioscin is an iso-spirostanol derivative. It is the major effective component for the quality control of many herbal medicines, Chinese patent medicines and herbal medicine prescriptions. This paper reviewed the researches on the pharmacology, hepatotoxicity and pharmacokinetics of dioscin in recent years. Dioscin has many pharmacological effects, especially in the cardiovascular regulation. However, the potential hepatotoxicity of dioscin should be paid more attention. Its poor absorption, slow metabolism and low bioavailability should also be noticed. The dose-dependent hepatotoxicity of dioscin should be taken into account for the safety of the prescriptions containing dioscin in clinic.
