The Cardiotoxicity of Terfenadine and Application Profile

Abstract: Objective The cardiotoxicity of Terfenadine and its application profile in the world were reviewed in this article. The references of clinical rational and safe use of the drug were provided. MethodsWe accessed relevant literature of Terfenadine withdrawal from the market in some countries and analysed the research on the cardiac toxicity of the drug, and summarized the application and adverse reactions of this drug in China. ResultsAnalysis showed that Terfenadine has cardiac toxicity, when overdosed or increased blood concentration the adverse reaction was easy to happen. Although the drug was withdrawn or was restricted in use in the late 1990s, Terfenadine is still used in China as prescription drug, and the adverse reactions were reported in recent years. ConclusionThe clinical adverse drug reactions should be alert. The dosage and combination drugs should be specified, in order to improve the safety and effectiveness for clinical medication.
