Abstract: Objective To provide literature basis and ideas for the research of systemic toxicity based on effective and toxical composition of Evodia rutaecarpa(Juss.) Benth. Methods Making the ideas which consistent with the characteristics of Tradition Chinese Medicine by collecting, analyzing and summarizing Ancient literature, books in past dynasties and related literature in recent 10 years both at home and abroad about Evodia rutaecarpa (Juss.)Benth. Results Variety efficacy of Evodia rutaecarpa(Juss.) Benth documented in ancient literature, have been confirmed in the modern pharmacological studies. But the record about Evodia rutaecarpa(Juss.) Benth "slight toxicity" relatively lack in modern toxicology studies, and its toxical composition, toxic manifestations are not described in detail. So a series of studies should be proceeded. For example, what are the material basis creating efficacy and toxicity How is the relationship between "material basis-efficacy-toxicity", what aer the target of toxical material basis, how is the process of material basis in vivo and how is the relationship between "dose-efficacy- toxicity" of Evodia rutaecarpa (Juss.) Benth, and so on. To provide scientific experimental evidence for completely and effectively using medication of Evodia rutaecarpa(Juss.) Benth in clinic. Conclusion The toxicity of Evodia of toxical TCM should be studied under the background of efficacy, but also to focus on the process in vivo, the role of pathway and target of toxical material basis, and focus on the relations of "dose-effect-toxicity" under efficacy and symptoms of a disease.
