Abstract: For a long time, our knowledge of and research on the safety of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) have been confined to the inherent toxicity of drugs. However, safety incidents of non-toxic traditional Chinese medicine have been frequently reported in recent years. It is often difficult to make scientific explanations and formulate effective prevention and control measures by evaluating inherent toxicity or direct toxicity alone. Based on the current knowledge and research findings of indirect toxicity of TCM, we recommended strategies for prevention and control of safety risks. We focused on explanation of the difference between indirect toxicity and intrinsic toxicity or immunogenicity. We also discussed how to evaluate and prevent safety risks of TCM effectively in order to provide new ideas and countermeasures for guiding clinical safety and rational use of medicines and promoting the healthy development of traditional Chinese medicine.

Key words: indirect hepatotoxicity, traditional Chinese medicine, safety evaluation, risk prevention and control
